Earned Sick Leave Keeps People In Jobs (August 13, 2017)

I am writing in response to Sen. Michael Hough’s opinion piece, “Mandated paid sick leave is awful policy, but great politics,” published on July 2.
This year was the fifth year (not the 12th, as Sen. Hough suggests) that the Legislature introduced the Healthy Working Families Act (HB1) and with overwhelming constituent support, the bill passed with veto-override majority votes in both chambers. The growing momentum for earned paid sick leave is hardly surprising: Everyone gets sick, and it is good for Maryland families and the state economy when working people in Frederick County don’t lose their paychecks or jobs because they need a sick day.
